Psychotherapy is a method in which trained professionals use interpersonal relationship to aid clients who have some mental disorder. These trained professionals use an array of techniques and procedures to cure patients. Sometime all that is required is for patients to have someone they can talk to and share their problems with but then there are times when the problems are not so simple and they need a fair amount of expertise in handling. It is not necessary to always be a psychologist if you have to practice therapy. Sometimes marriage counselors, occupational therapists and social workers also use these techniques to be able to help people in their relationships, occupation or more. There are various techniques that these therapists use. These include psychoanalytic techniques, cognitive behavior therapy, depth psychology, existential, humanistic and transpersonal techniques. Psychoanalysis involves the free flow of conversations and verbalizations by the patient so that the therapist can understand what is plaguing the patient. Free associations, dream interpretations and fantasies are part of the techniques that are used. The therapist formulates his own analysis of the problem after hearing the patient. Cognitive behavior therapy is another that is used so as to be able to change the specific behaviors that are not natural. This technique is aimed at changing beliefs and reactions over time and helps in correcting destructive behavior if any exist. Psychodynamic techniques aim at trying to find the inner hidden thoughts of the patient and therefore is aimed at understanding the deep seated desires and issued that exist.
A psychotherapist needs to be someone who is extremely comfortable with himself because the number of patients that these therapists see can sometimes take its toll on their own health at times. Practicing therapists need to ensure that they are confident about themselves and that they do not the worries of their patients transcend onto them.
Psychotherapists also need to be careful about what they say and the manner in which they make certain suggestion. Sometimes a loose comment can cause more harm than you can think if it is not well thought through before it is made to the patient. Despite such responsibility on the head of the therapist they need to remain calm.
The psychotherapy practice is therefore not something that is meant for everyone. Just by passing the course and studying psychology one does not become a great therapist. The person intending to practice this form of therapy needs to know what he or she is getting into so as to be able to serve people better.
The fact of the matter is that when therapists see patients each day they tend to start feeling depressed. Depression due to hearing other people’s problems and treating them is something that is very normal. Imagine how you feel when you hear a sad story. When psychotherapy involves so many people, it is natural for something like this to happen.
